Currently reading Colossians...
There is a God, he revealed
himself to Abraham. To me it seems that the biggest point of his self-revelation to Abraham was when he said, “here I am,
God” - recognizing that he was not just another spirit, but truly God over all. To prove his
divinity, Isaac was born to old Abraham and his wife when they were near 100 years old. Then God caused the growth of his son Isaac’s descendants when they were
in Egypt, their crossing of the Red Sea, and the recorded history of
Israel (Abraham’s descendants through Isaac’s son, Israel) and God’s dealing
with them. This shows that he has standards and power, that there is punishment for doing
wrong, and that there is restoration through repentance - much in part to show that
you really can’t get God’s blessings by unfailing effort, because mankind (you
and I) will fail.
And then there is the ultimate revelation of
God - God in the flesh, Emmanuel, ("Jesus" - meaning God with us) came to earth as a man born of a young Jewish woman named Mary. Then
comes the history of God’s dealings with mankind through a new agreement put
into effect by Jesus. Most of the rest of the Bible is about God’s
dealings with mankind through Jesus (who is God’s Son and God Himself), but there
are also other books not in the Bible that are written about the history of
God’s people both individually and as a group who live with him through
Jesus.
The common focus of all the Bible is that...
- There is a God and he has a specific personality/character
- He cared enough to spin his existence out in the history of mankind (through Abraham’s story)
- He knows each person, their needs, and has made a provision for mankind through Jesus.
To me, in my work as a lawyer with injured, dying, or the
dead - most of whom belong to God - the question comes again as to God’s care and
love and whether he is consistent. It is fair to ask the question
about how much does God love us and about God’s character.
Defeat Your
Saboteurs is God’s message about the love of God, what he has done for you, and
your part. God will not do it all, you have a part to
do. To a great extent, how much we know God will depend on the time
we spend with Him and how much of Him we want. God does exist, he
does care, and he does love us….although it can seem distant, and there is a
future great life for us in heaven. In the meantime, we are to help
encourage each other to be close to Jesus, to listen to what he is saying to us
personally and others, and to help each other get through this oftentimes
challenging life.
